"Come to the Boss" is a book written especially for dogs, but since most cannot read, owners from sparkling young to shuffling old will have to do it for them.
It is extraordinary, that a read-aloud book has never been written specifically for dogs before, as it has long been known that reading to dogs has a special effect on both the dog and the reader. Libraries have special programmes under the banner of Quail Reading, to make children more confident. But this is always done with pre-existing (children's) books.
Older owners can also strengthen the bond with their pets by regularly treating them to a story tailored to them. Hans Melissen (writer and director) has been reading to his own dogs from newspapers or books for years, just for fun. In recent years, he no longer has a dog himself, but regularly babysits friends' dogs. There, too, he continued to read to lodgers.
When one of the bosses, seeing this particular interaction, remarked that it was strange that no stories had ever been written especially for dogs before, a fire started burning at the artistic centipede Melissen. The result is a book of 14 stories with illustrations by Silver Brush winner Marijke Klompmaker.
Stories full of adventures all set around the Trabos, a last piece of nature between a town and a village that have grown closer together. About the owners and the dogs. About dogs that make no distinction between race, colour or status, because dogs only want one thing: to have fun in freedom with both quadrupeds and bipeds.
